YouTube Thumbnail Translator for Multi-Language Channels

A YouTube thumbnail translator turns your thumbnail text into other languages so each audience can read it. StoreLocale detects and translates the on-image text, repaints it in place, and lets you review every language before export. You then resize each file and add it in YouTube Studio, where long-form videos can carry one thumbnail per language on eligible channels.

How the workflow works

  1. 01

Upload the final 16:9 thumbnail for a long-form video in your main language.

  2. 02

Choose the languages your viewers speak, matching the languages you plan to add under Languages in YouTube Studio.

  3. 03

Review the free translations and shorten any headline that no longer fits the design.

  4. 04

Repaint, compare each version with the original, and export the PNG files.

  5. 05

Resize each PNG back to 16:9, then add it to that language's Thumbnail slot in YouTube Studio.

The long-cited 1280 x 720 figure no longer appears on YouTube's thumbnail help page (opens in a new tab). The page also warns that if a vertical video has a 16:9 custom thumbnail, YouTube replaces it with an auto-generated 4:5 thumbnail on the home, explore and subscription pages.

Channels also have a daily custom thumbnail limit. If you see "Daily custom thumbnail limit reached", try again in 24 hours (YouTube Help (opens in a new tab)). YouTube says limits vary by country or region and channel history, and Community Guidelines strikes lower them, so spread a large batch of localized thumbnails over several days.

How do you add a thumbnail per language in YouTube Studio?

YouTube Help (opens in a new tab) says that for long-form videos you can upload thumbnails in different languages, and viewers see the one that matches their language setting. The documented steps are:

  1. Upload the main thumbnail for the video under Content in YouTube Studio.
  2. Open Languages for that video and pick a language.
  3. Under Thumbnail, select Add, choose the localized file, and select Update.
  4. Repeat for each language you prepared.

In September 2025 YouTube said it had begun piloting multi-language thumbnails with a select group of creators (opens in a new tab), and no general-availability date has been announced. If Languages shows no Thumbnail option, the feature may not be available on your channel yet.

There's no API route for this today. The Data API videos resource (opens in a new tab) localizes only the title and description, and thumbnails.set (opens in a new tab) has no language parameter, so per-language thumbnails are added in Studio.

How do you translate YouTube thumbnail text with StoreLocale?

Start from the final thumbnail in your main language, not a work-in-progress file. The translation follows whatever text is in the image, so settle the wording first.

  1. Upload the finished thumbnail, ideally the full-resolution file rather than a compressed copy.
  2. Choose target languages, for example Spanish, Portuguese and Hindi for a tech channel whose headline reads "BEST BUDGET PHONE?".
  3. Read each translation. Edit the lines where a literal translation loses the hook, and keep product names as they are.
  4. Pick a quality tier: Standard targets 1K, Pro 2K and Ultra 4K. Ultra steps down automatically when the model can't produce 4K.
  5. Compare each version with the original, export the PNG files, and resize each one back to 16:9 before uploading.

StoreLocale has one generic Portuguese variant. If your audience is mainly in Brazil or mainly in Portugal, check the wording before you upload.

Can you A/B test translated thumbnails?

YouTube's Test & compare feature tests up to three titles and thumbnails per video (opens in a new tab). YouTube announced this in September 2025, extending the thumbnail testing it launched in 2023.

A practical order is to test designs in your main language first, then localize the winning thumbnail. That way you pay for repaints only on the version you keep, and every language shares the same layout.

What should you check before adding thumbnails in YouTube Studio?

  • Size and ratio: open each export and resize or crop it to 16:9, at least 640 px wide, before uploading.
  • File size: a large PNG can pass the 2 MB mobile limit, so upload from YouTube Studio on desktop, where the limit is 50 MB.
  • Legibility: view each version at a small size. If a translated headline wraps onto three lines, shorten it and repaint.
  • Faces: thumbnails often lead with a close-up face. Zoom in on each language version to confirm the expression and features match the original.

Frequently asked questions

What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?

YouTube Help (opens in a new tab) recommends 3840 x 2160 pixels at 16:9 for videos, with a minimum width of 640 pixels. For Shorts, it recommends 2160 x 3840 at 9:16.

Can YouTube Shorts have a thumbnail per language?

YouTube's multi-language help describes per-language thumbnails for long-form videos only. Custom Shorts thumbnails can be uploaded in YouTube Studio on a computer, according to YouTube Help (opens in a new tab).

Why can't I upload more thumbnails today?

YouTube sets a daily custom thumbnail limit per channel. The limit varies by country or region and channel history, and the error message says to try again in 24 hours (YouTube Help (opens in a new tab)).

Can I upload localized thumbnails through the YouTube API?

Not per language. The thumbnails.set (opens in a new tab) method sets one thumbnail and has no language parameter, and API localizations cover only titles and descriptions.

Does StoreLocale translate my video title and description?

No. Add translated titles and descriptions in YouTube Studio. YouTube says they can show in search results for viewers who speak those languages (YouTube Help (opens in a new tab)).
