Guide
How to Localize YouTube Thumbnails and TikTok Covers
To localize video thumbnails, translate only the short text on the image, keep faces and branding unchanged, and export one file per language. On YouTube, long-form videos can carry per-language thumbnails through the Languages section of Studio. TikTok covers are picked from a video frame, so a localized cover has to be part of the video itself.

What can you localize on a video today?
A localized video package has three layers: what viewers hear, what they read in search and on the watch page, and what they see in the thumbnail before they click. YouTube supports all three to different degrees, while short-form platforms give you far less control over the preview image.
| Element | What YouTube supports | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Audio | Creator-uploaded dubbed tracks that play by default in the viewer's preferred language (YouTube Help: Multi-language features (opens in a new tab)) | Videos and Shorts; requires access to Advanced features |
| Title and description | Translated metadata shown to viewers in that language, including in search (YouTube Help: translation tools (opens in a new tab)) | Any upload |
| Thumbnail | A separate thumbnail per language, shown to viewers based on their language setting (YouTube Help: Multi-language features (opens in a new tab)) | Long-form videos only, per the help page |
The reach argument comes from YouTube itself. Its help center says that on average over two-thirds of a creator's watch time comes from outside their home area (opens in a new tab), and YouTube reported that creators who uploaded multi-language audio saw over 25% of their watch time come from views in a non-primary language (opens in a new tab) as of July 2025.
How do per-language YouTube thumbnails work?
YouTube's multi-language help page states that for long-form videos you can upload thumbnails in different languages (opens in a new tab), and viewers see the one that matches their language setting. You add them in YouTube Studio on desktop after the main thumbnail is in place.
- Upload the main (source-language) thumbnail for the video under Content.
- Open Languages for that video and pick the language you want to add.
- Under Thumbnail, choose Add, select the localized image and click Update.
- Repeat for each language, ideally alongside that language's translated title and description.
Availability is still gated. A YouTube blog post dated September 10, 2025 said the company had begun piloting multi-language thumbnails with a select group of creators (opens in a new tab), and no official general-availability date has been published since. If the Thumbnail option does not appear under Languages for your channel, the feature has not reached you yet.
Automation is limited too. In the YouTube Data API, the videos resource (opens in a new tab) holds only a title and description per language under localizations, and thumbnails.set (opens in a new tab) has no language parameter. Plan to add per-language thumbnails by hand in Studio rather than through an upload script.
What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?
YouTube's thumbnail help page no longer lists the older 1280 x 720 figure. The current recommendations are larger, and they differ for regular videos, Shorts and podcast playlists.
| Format | Recommended size | Aspect ratio | Minimum |
|---|---|---|---|
| Video (long-form) | 3840 x 2160 px | 16:9 | 640 px wide |
| Shorts | 2160 x 3840 px | 9:16 | 640 px tall |
| Podcast playlist | Not stated as a pixel size | 1:1 | Not stated |
- Formats: the page names image formats such as JPG or PNG (opens in a new tab).
- File size: 2 MB for video thumbnails uploaded from mobile (10 MB for podcasts) and 50 MB from desktop for video, Shorts and podcast thumbnails.
- Account: custom thumbnails require a verified account, including for Shorts.
- Daily limit: channels have a daily custom thumbnail limit that varies by region and channel history; the error asks you to try again in 24 hours. Uploading many language versions in one sitting can hit it.
- Vertical videos: if a vertical video has a 16:9 custom thumbnail, YouTube replaces it with an auto-generated 4:5 thumbnail on the home, explore and subscription pages.
All figures above come from YouTube Help: Add custom thumbnails (opens in a new tab).
Can you localize YouTube Shorts thumbnails?
Not per language, based on current documentation. The multi-language help page describes per-language thumbnails for long-form videos and does not mention Shorts, so a Short has one thumbnail for every viewer.
You still control that one image. A custom Shorts thumbnail can be uploaded only in YouTube Studio on a computer (opens in a new tab) (Content, Shorts, Thumbnail, Upload file), while the mobile app lets you pick a frame and add text and filters (opens in a new tab). If one Short serves several markets, keep the thumbnail text minimal or language-neutral and localize the title, description and audio instead.
How do TikTok covers work, and can you localize them?
TikTok's help center defines the cover as the thumbnail that previews a video on your profile and in search, and describes choosing it before posting: tap Select cover, drag to a frame and tap Save (TikTok Support: Editing, posting, and deleting (opens in a new tab)).
The developer side matches. The Content Posting API (opens in a new tab) takes a video_cover_timestamp_ms value to choose the cover frame, falls back to the first frame when it is missing or invalid, and has no field for a custom cover image.
TikTok does not publish an official cover size for organic posts. The 1080 x 1920 figure you see quoted widely is an industry convention, not a documented spec, so treat the cover as whatever frame your 9:16 video renders.
In practice, a localized TikTok cover is a localized title card inside the video. Design a still frame with the translated hook, place it in each language edit (often the first second), and select that frame as the cover when posting the language version.
What cover size do Instagram Reels use?
Instagram's help center recommends a Reels cover of 420 x 654 px, a 1:1.55 ratio (opens in a new tab), and notes that the cover currently cannot be edited after upload. Meta's Instagram Graph API reference (opens in a new tab) instead recommends 9:16 cover images (JPEG, up to 8 MB), crops other ratios to the centered 9:16 area and uses the centered 1:1 square as the cover when a Reel is shared to the feed.
Because the two sources disagree, design a 9:16 cover and keep the translated text and faces inside the centered square. That layout survives the profile grid, the feed crop and the full-screen view.
Which platform rules matter for localized covers?
| Platform | Preview image source | Per-language preview? |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube long-form | Custom upload (source (opens in a new tab)) | Yes, via Studio Languages (pilot announced September 10, 2025; source (opens in a new tab)) |
| YouTube Shorts | Frame in app or custom upload in desktop Studio | No per-language thumbnail documented |
| TikTok | Frame from the video (source (opens in a new tab)) | No per-language cover documented |
| Instagram Reels | Upload or frame (source (opens in a new tab)) | No per-language cover documented |
What should change in a localized thumbnail?
A thumbnail is read in about the time it takes to scroll past it, so localize the hook, not the design. Keep the face, product shot, colors and layout identical across languages so the video stays recognizable, and change only the words.
- Rewrite, don't transliterate. A four-word English hook such as "I Tried Every Budget Mic" may need a different structure in German or Japanese to stay short and punchy. Brief translators on the maximum characters that fit.
- Leave room for longer languages. Plan the text box for the longest language you ship; see how text expands by language.
- Keep brand and product names as they are. Channel names, app names and model numbers usually stay in their original form.
- Mirror layout for right-to-left scripts. Arabic and Hebrew hooks read from the right, so check alignment and arrows; the RTL guide covers the same decisions for store screenshots.
- Check glyph support. Pick a font that actually contains Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Thai or Arabic characters rather than relying on fallbacks.
- Match the title. The thumbnail text should echo, not repeat, the translated title shown under it.
How do you localize a thumbnail with StoreLocale?
StoreLocale was built for app store screenshots, but its text detection and translation work on any image with a few lines of overlay text, including a finished thumbnail. Use it to draft and review translated hooks and localized artwork per language, then do the final sizing in your own design tool.
- Upload the finished source thumbnail as a PNG, JPEG or WebP image. Each file becomes its own slide, and duplicate uploads are skipped.
- Run text detection to pull out the visible strings with their positions. Detection and translation cost 0 credits.
- Pick target languages from the 32 supported (plus English as source), including Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Arabic and Hebrew, then edit each translation until the hook reads naturally.
- Generate the localized image. The repaint uses a generative image model: Standard costs 1 credit (1K output), Pro 2 credits (2K) and Ultra 4 credits (4K). Unchanged inputs are not billed again, and a bring-your-own OpenRouter or Gemini key uses 0 platform credits.
- Check each result for spelling, line breaks, faces and logos.
- Export the PNG drafts, then rebuild each approved language version at the platform's size in your own design tool before uploading it yourself.
How do you publish and check localized thumbnails?
- Name files by video and locale, for example budget-mic-review_de.png and budget-mic-review_ja.png, so the right file lands in the right language slot.
- Add the translated title and description for the same language first, then the thumbnail, so each language version is complete.
- Spread uploads across days if you ship many languages, since the daily custom thumbnail limit applies to the channel.
- Spot-check each language from an account or device set to that language, and confirm the thumbnail and title appear together.
Frequently asked questions
Can I upload a different YouTube thumbnail for each language?
Yes, for long-form videos where the feature is available. YouTube's help center describes adding a per-language thumbnail under Languages in YouTube Studio. YouTube announced a pilot on September 10, 2025 and has not published a general-availability date, so some channels may not see the option yet.
Are per-language thumbnails available for YouTube Shorts?
The official multi-language help page describes per-language thumbnails for long-form videos only and does not mention Shorts. A Short has one thumbnail, uploaded in desktop YouTube Studio or chosen from a frame in the mobile app.
Is 1280 x 720 still the recommended YouTube thumbnail size?
No. YouTube's current help page recommends 3840 x 2160 at 16:9 for videos and 2160 x 3840 at 9:16 for Shorts, with a 640 px minimum.
Can I set per-language thumbnails through the YouTube Data API?
Not according to the public reference. The videos resource localizations object stores only a title and description per language, and thumbnails.set has no language parameter, so per-language thumbnails are added in YouTube Studio.
What size is a TikTok cover?
TikTok does not publish an official cover size for organic posts. The cover is a frame chosen from your video, so it has the same dimensions as the video. To show a translated cover, place a translated title card in the video and select that frame.
Does StoreLocale have YouTube or TikTok thumbnail presets?
No. Exports are PNG files scaled from a fixed 1320 x 2868 portrait base, so 16:9 thumbnails do not export at correct proportions. Use StoreLocale to draft and review translated hook text and artwork, then build the final thumbnail in your own design tool.
How many credits does localizing one thumbnail cost?
Text detection and translation cost 0 credits. Each AI repaint costs 1 credit on Standard, 2 on Pro or 4 on Ultra per language, and 0 platform credits with your own API key. See pricing for credit packs.
