Translate App Store Screenshots to Italian

Italian screenshots go under the it localization in App Store Connect and it-IT in Google Play Console. Short English labels can triple in length, so leave generous caption space. Keep elided articles on one line with the word they attach to, use È rather than E', and choose informal or formal address before you translate.

How much space do Italian captions need?

Short strings grow the most. In the W3C article Text size in translation (opens in a new tab), the English word "views" becomes an Italian word three times as long, and the biggest jump in its comparison. The same article quotes IBM guidance for European languages: text up to 10 characters can expand by 200–300%, and 11–20 characters by 180–200%.

Short labels and two-word headlines fall into those bands, so they are the captions most likely to overflow. Growth is uneven, though, and some labels stay compact, which is why you should test real strings rather than apply one multiplier.

Rewrite before you shrink. A headline set in a smaller size to fit may be unreadable in the small previews shoppers scroll past, while a tighter Italian verb keeps the size intact. The text expansion guide covers box sizing in more depth.

How should apostrophes and accents look on a slide?

Italian drops a vowel before another vowel and marks the gap with an apostrophe, so articles and prepositions fuse with the next word (the Italian for "the app" is written as a single letter, an apostrophe and "app"). The elided article belongs to the next word, so a line must never end on an article and its apostrophe. When a caption wraps automatically, check that the break falls after the full pair.

  • Use the typographic apostrophe (’) in display headlines if your brand style does, and keep it consistent across all slides.
  • Write the capital accented E as È, not E'. The apostrophe shortcut comes from keyboards without the key and looks careless in large type.
  • Watch final accents on common words such as "more", "city" and "why". The Italian word for "why" ends in an acute accent (é) while the word for "is" is a grave è, and the difference is visible at headline size.
  • Leave vertical room above capitals so È and À are not clipped by a tight line height.

Should Italian screenshots use formal or informal address?

Italian addresses the reader either informally or formally, and the choice changes every imperative in your captions. A caption such as "Discover your stats" takes a different verb ending and a different possessive in each register, and the formal possessive is capitalized.

Many consumer apps write in the informal register, while some finance, health or professional tools prefer a more formal voice. There is no universal rule, so the deciding factor is your app's own interface: screenshot captions should use the same register as the strings users meet after they install.

Tell the translator or the AI which register to use before the first pass. Switching halfway means re-checking every verb, possessive and pronoun on every slide.

Which storefronts show your Italian listing?

Apple's App Store localizations table (opens in a new tab) lists Italian as the default language in Italy, with English (U.K.) as the additional language. In Switzerland, German is the default and Italian is one of the additional languages, alongside English (U.K.) and French.

Both stores offer one Italian listing, so Swiss Italian speakers see the same screenshots as shoppers in Italy. Avoid references that only work in one country, such as a specific national holiday or a price shown only in one currency.

What does StoreLocale produce for Italian?

StoreLocale translates into a single Italian target with code it, labeled Italian (Italiano) in the language picker. The PNG export places those files in folders such as App Store (iOS)/it/iphone-6-9/ inside the ZIP. You upload App Store folders to App Store Connect as it and Google Play folders to Play Console as it-IT yourself.

Detecting and translating the text is free of credits, and every Italian string can be edited before the image is repainted. The repaint itself costs 1, 2 or 4 credits per image depending on the Standard, Pro or Ultra tier. Because it is generative, check apostrophes and accents on the finished image as well as in the text field.

What should a native Italian reviewer check?

  1. Register: informal or formal address used consistently on every slide and matching the app.
  2. Elided articles intact and never split from the word they attach to across lines.
  3. Accents correct in the rendered image: È not E', and an acute é where the word needs one rather than a grave è.
  4. Captions read naturally rather than as a literal translation, especially calques from English marketing phrases.
  5. Loanwords that Italian users expect in English (such as app, login and feed) are not forced into awkward Italian equivalents.
  6. Numbers and prices use Italian formatting, with a comma for decimals and the euro sign after the amount.

Frequently asked questions

What locale code should I use for Italian screenshots?

Use it in App Store Connect and it-IT in Google Play Console. Both appear in the official lists: Apple's locale shortcodes (opens in a new tab) and the Play Console language list (opens in a new tab).

How much longer is Italian than English?

It depends on string length. W3C shows the English word "views" tripling in Italian, and the IBM figures it quotes put expansion for strings of up to 10 characters at 200–300%. Longer sentences grow proportionally less.

Is there a separate Italian listing for Switzerland?

No. Both stores have one Italian localization. Swiss users with Italian settings see the same it or it-IT screenshots as users in Italy.

Should app screenshots use formal address in Italian?

Only if your app does. Consumer apps often use informal address, but the captions should always match the register of your in-app text.

Can StoreLocale keep my brand name untranslated in Italian captions?

The translation step is instructed to keep brand marks and acronyms as written, and you can edit any Italian string before the repaint, so check brand names in review.
