Translate App Store Screenshots to Portuguese
Both App Store Connect and Play Console list Portuguese as two languages, pt-BR for Brazil and pt-PT for Portugal, with no neutral option. StoreLocale produces one generic Portuguese set. Upload it where it fits best, then have a native speaker from each target country adapt vocabulary, pronouns and spelling before it goes live.

Should you target pt-BR, pt-PT or both?
You have to choose, because a plain "pt" listing does not exist. Apple's list of App Store localizations (opens in a new tab) and Google's Play Console language list (opens in a new tab) both name Brazil and Portugal separately, and the codes match across the two consoles.
Leaving a variant empty has a visible cost on iOS. Apple says a newly added language starts with the primary language's screenshots (opens in a new tab) until you replace them, so an unfilled pt-PT listing keeps showing your primary-language artwork.
| Approach | When it makes sense | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| pt-BR only | Your users and support are in Brazil | Portugal gets whichever listing the store falls back to |
| Same set in both | Captions are short and use neutral wording | One variant will read slightly foreign |
| Adapted set per variant | Both markets matter to revenue | Two review passes and two exports |
What does StoreLocale output for Portuguese?
StoreLocale translates into one Portuguese variant, stored under the code pt. There is no separate Brazilian or European option in the language picker, and the export folder for this language is named pt.
Text detection and translation cost no credits, so the cheapest moment to fix wording is before the repaint. Edit the translated Portuguese strings for your main market first, then generate the images once that text is approved.
To serve both countries, export the pt set once and keep that ZIP; renaming its folder to the target store code only helps your own bookkeeping, since uploads are manual. Then edit the Portuguese text for the other country and export again, which replaces the first pt assets in the project. Only slides whose text changed are repainted and billed again.
Where do Brazilian and European Portuguese differ on a screenshot?
The two variants are mutually intelligible, but a marketing caption exposes the difference quickly. These are common examples a reviewer will spot; they are not a complete list.
| Topic | Brazil (pt-BR) | Portugal (pt-PT) |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile phone | A word derived from "cellular" | A compound meaning roughly "tele-mobile" |
| Addressing the user | A polite "you" pronoun is the everyday choice | The informal "you" or an impersonal phrasing is common |
| Ongoing action | Gerund, as in English "I am using" | A preposition plus the infinitive, roughly "I am at to use" |
| Screen | A word that literally means "canvas" | A word borrowed from French |
| Download (verb) | A verb that literally means "to lower" | A verb that literally means "to unload" |
A caption meaning "Download it on your phone", written with the Brazilian verb and phone noun, is natural in São Paulo and clearly Brazilian in Lisbon. That is fine if Portugal is a secondary market, but worth fixing if it is a launch target.
How much space do Portuguese captions need?
Plan for single words to balloon. W3C shows the English word "views" becoming a Portuguese word with a 2.6 times length ratio (opens in a new tab), and cites IBM figures of 200–300% growth for European-language strings up to 10 characters.
- Size caption boxes for the longest variant, since pt-PT wording can differ in length from pt-BR.
- Watch tab bars, buttons and chart labels inside the screenshot; they rarely have room for a word three times longer.
- Keep tildes and cedillas in view: Ã, Õ and Ç in uppercase headlines need extra line height so the marks do not clip.
What should a Portuguese reviewer check before upload?
Pick a reviewer from the country you are uploading to, not just any Portuguese speaker. The repaint is generated by an image model, so the check covers pixels as well as wording.
- Does the vocabulary match the target country, for example the words for phone and screen?
- Is the form of address consistent from the first slide to the last?
- Do verb constructions match the variant, for example the gerund in Brazil versus a preposition plus infinitive in Portugal?
- Are the tilde and cedilla letters (ã, õ, ç) and accented capitals rendered correctly, with no substituted or missing marks?
- Did any repainted UI label lose letters, repeat a word or overflow its button?
- Are currency, dates and decimal commas right for BRL or EUR where they appear?
- Is the folder uploaded to the store code the reviewer approved?
Frequently asked questions
Can I upload the same Portuguese screenshots to pt-BR and pt-PT?
Yes. Both consoles accept identical images for the two variants. Readers will understand them, but wording tuned for one country can feel foreign in the other, so review before reusing.
Is StoreLocale's Portuguese Brazilian or European?
It is one generic Portuguese variant with the code pt, not a Brazil- or Portugal-specific output. Treat the result as a draft and have a reviewer from the target country adapt it.
What happens if I only fill pt-BR on the App Store?
If you never add pt-PT, Apple shows Portuguese-language users in Portugal the next most relevant localization, which may be pt-BR or your primary language. If you add pt-PT but skip its screenshots, it reuses the primary language's screenshots.
Why are Portuguese captions so much longer than English?
Portuguese often uses longer words and more words per phrase. W3C's example turns the English word "views" into a Portuguese word about 2.6 times longer, so short English labels need the most room.
